Eureka 8851AVZ Capture Plus Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

This is one heavy vacuum and it has a louder than usual noise, a pitch that hurt my ears. However, the amount of dust and lint in the canister was amazing and the "power paw" is great for stairs and furniture and the duster is really a nice feature. The way it cleans itself is so cool.Overall, I'd say this is a great vacuum, but he noise and weight take away a few stars.

Hoover U5468-900 WindTunnel Supreme Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Hoover U5468-900 WindTunnel Supreme Bagged Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my husband and I decided to replace our 12-year old Hoover, we did hours of internet research on vacuums.Eventually, we decided to stick with a bag model, as dealing with canisters and filters sounded like too much trouble (plus, we don't have pets, so we didn't really see the need). After weighing various factors, from special features to ease of use to price, we decided to go with this Hoover Windtunnel model.

We got a great price using Amazon's discount offer, and the vacuum shipped very quickly despite our choice of Super Saver shipping. The unit required only simple assembly, although I should note that our package was missing a required bolt, so we had to contact Hoover for a replacement and wait another week or so before we were able to complete assembly and use the vacuum. Finally, we had the opportunity to try our new product. The first thing we noticed was the sound, as this vacuum, while still loud, is noticeably quieter than our old Hoover.Second, the cord is significantly longer (about 30 feet), which is very convenient for maneuvering around our home.My husband also appreciated the convenience of the headlight, although to be fair, most newer models include this feature.

As far as cleaning ability goes, this vacuum does a good job.It doesn't necessarily out-perform our old vacuum, but it does seem to stir up less dust. Also, the larger vacuum head speeds up the chore time a bit (although it also makes it harder to fit in tight places). The dirt indicator light did seem to be consistent with areas that required a bit more attention, which was nice.Another feature of this vacuum is the build-in handle at the unit's base for cleaning stairs; this was a nice idea, but my husband (who does the majority of the vacuuming in our house--lucky me!) found it to be a bit cumbersome and uncomfortable to use.

Overall, we are happy with our choice of this vacuum, a solid performer that can be purchased via Amazon at a very reasonable price. If you are living in a home with no pets and looking for a good basic vacuum, this would be an excellent choice.

UPDATE JULY 2008:Unfortunately, I need to downgrade my review of this vacuum, as its performance has deteriorated over time, and we are currently in the market to purchase a new one.My husband, who is the main user of the vacuum, compiled the following list of complaints:

1. The on/off switch ceased working shortly after the one-year warranty period expired.Currently, the vacuum can only be turned on or off by plugging and unplugging the unit from an electrical outlet.

2. The height adjuster failed, also shortly after the one-year warranty period expired; the vacuum now leaves an odd-looking wave pattern on the carpet unless it is used at the highest setting (which is the least effective).

3. The natural forward momentum of the vacuum stopped after only a few months of use, making the unit more difficult to push.

4. The dirt indicator light seems arbitrary and thus virtually useless.

5. The vacuum is awkward to use on stairs:the place to grab is not a handle--rather, it is just an indentation in the plastic, which becomes painful to hold after only a few seconds.

6. The cord does not remain attached to the clamps on vacuum during use: when the cord is fully extended, it pulls loose of the clamps, causing it to constantly get underfoot.

7. The vacuum's motor "revs" loudly at random times and for no apparent reason.

8. The dirt bags are difficult both to attach and to remove.

9. The vacuum does not perform well on hard floors: it blows dirt around, necessitating several passes.

10. The vacuum feels heavy and has a wide head, making cleaning in tight spaces difficult.

Electrolux EL8502B Versatility 12 Amp Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Electrolux EL8502B Versatility 12 Amp Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

I looked at a lot of other vacuums before choosing this one.It SEEMED to be built well and the design/engineering would be very handy and effective.I got it home and was amazed at how well it picked up dirt.To my disappointment however, after a week of use, it started to malfunction.First, I noticed the brush roller seemed to stop spinning on carpet. Then shortly afterward, the vacuum would shut itself off repeatedly after the first couple minutes of operation. The manual says this vacuum is designed to shut itself off when there is a blockage inside it to prevent overheating.Well I checked and rechecked for a blockage, cleaned the filter and brush roll but it still did the same thing.I contacted Electrolux customer service and they would not admit this was a common problem nor would they tell me if there was a fix for this problem but if you research reviews on other web sites, it appears to be happening quite often.Instead of going through the hassle of going to my nearest service center 40 miles away, I returned the vacuum for a refund.I really liked the vacuum at first but will not try another one.I found a Hoover Elite Windtunnel with a 6 year warranty. Don't bother with this model, you will eventually regret it. By the way, if you are looking for the quality Electrolux vacuum of the past, these are not it.These are made in China by the same company that makes Eureka. The old Electrolux was bought by a company called Aerus Lux.

Onboard accessories consist of a crevice tool for between couch cushions or other tight spots, a dusting brush for bookshelves and tabletops, and a handheld turbo tool for removing dust and pet hair from stairs and upholstery. Its bagless technology means no more bags to buy, and the 1-1/5-quart dust cup empties easily, keeping hands clean and away from the dirt. Furthermore, its anti-odor HEPA filtration system eliminates odors and captures 99.97-percent of pet dander, dust mites, pollen, and mold for a cleaner, more welcoming home. Other highlights include edge-cleaning bristles, a 30-foot cord, and rugged construction with high-impact plastics. Bissell 20Q9 CleanView II Plus Upright Bagless Vacuum Review

Bissell 20Q9 CleanView II Plus Upright Bagless Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Bissell 35766 CleanView II is a great vacuum. It did what was advertised. I based my decision to buy this from the reviews on amazon.com

I bought this vacuum for my apartment in NYC with two other roommates. I have wood floors throughout the apartment. And I found that this vacuum is a little too much for this. I learned that this type vacuum is great for carpets and rugs. It still did its job well on bare floors. All the components worked well, and the attachments are pretty useful.

MAINTENANCE:
You have to clean this vacuum regularly. There are about 5 parts that needs to be cleaned thoroughly. These are the plastic reusable filters separates the dust from the larger chunks crumbs that the vacuum might pick up. In order for the vacuum to operate properly these filters have to be cleaned by washing it in soapy water, scrubbed, and dried. If poor maintenance clogs the filters it WILL damage the motor.

In a roommate environment, in our apartment this proved to be a problem. Because lets face it, who likes to clean? We have a cleaning schedule to keep all the roommates do their part in cleaning. But the problem arose to who cleans the vacuum, and the vacuum was never maintained and eventually overheated the motor and broke.CONCLUSION
This is a great vacuum and I recommend it to those who have carpeted apartments. For those of us with wood floors or in a roommate situation, this is not the best vacuum to have. In fact it's best to avoid bag-less vacuums. Just go for the more traditional bag vacuum, you can all (roommates) split the cost for the bags.

I went to a local authorized repair center and learned about how bag less vacuums work and the lifespan of the affordable vacuums such as this one have.
What I learned, low-end vacuums, such as this one have about a two or more years worth of use, if maintained properly before they break. It has to do with the quality of motor that they use on these things.

I also learned about the advantages and disadvantages of bag-less vacuums. The advantages are obvious--no bags to buy to use the vacuum, and less waste--it's a bit more ecological to have a bag-less vacuum. The disadvantages are the maintenance. The vacuum needs regular thorough cleaning of its own.

BISSELL Rewind SmartClean Bagless Upright Vacuum Review

BISSELL Rewind SmartClean Bagless Upright Vacuum
Average Reviews:

As I stated above this model is an updated version of the Bissell Cleanview Deluxe.I had that vacuum and was sad to give it up in an out of state move.Since my move (I couldn't find another Cleanview to purchsae at that time) I bought a cheap Dirt Devil Extreme Quick vac to get by (with a HEPA filter) and it served me well but would fill up too quickly and lose suction with cat fur and a lot of long human hair.I had been looking to find an updated version of the Cleanview and *poof* recently the SmartClean appeared on amazon before I found it anywhere else. I purchased it without hesitation.

I couldn't wait to get this out of the box and try it out. So far I like it a lot. Felt a bit more bulky than the Cleanview I had, but has the familiar handling. This Bissell added a few features, the retractable cord winder is nice, but I find that it retracts slightly while I vacuum which is a pretty minor annoyance.Suction is great and the included attachments are nice--same as the old Cleanview (powerprush, crevice tool, extender, and upholstery tool. There is a bit more air filtering than the Cleanview but has the same Dirt sensor "red light green light" which makes vacuuming more fun/productive. I simply couldn't believe the dust/pet dander that this vacuum picked up the first time I used it that the Dirt Devil had been missing.HEPA filter is great and necessary for my allergies. For the price range this vacuum is a great purchase, I hope to keep it for a while.

The unique SmartClean System was created with you in mind. The Clean Carpet Sensor helps to detect the areas in your carpet that need some extra attention; the red light will stay on for you until the area is clean and you'll know you're finished when the green light stays on. Also, the Clean Filter Indicator takes the guess work out of when to clean or change your filters. When you're done with your vacuuming, just press the automatic cord rewind button and stow it away- no more taking the time to rewind it yourself. The convenient clear bagless container allows for easy emptying. The Rewind SmartClean also includes a long reach hose, a TurboBrush Tool, extension wand, crevice tool and combination dusting/upholstery brush. It's no wonder that this is the smart choice in cleaning.

We call my wife the Vacuum Lady. All she does is Vacuum .When she gets home from work the first thing she does is grab the vacuum. We've had our 5 amp professional Eureka Vacuum since 1977. Although it's pretty beaten up it is still running fine.I wanted to buy her a new one. We bought a new Eureka lightweight and brought it back the next day. The sound was too high pitched and it felt like a toy vacuum. The brush is made out of plastic. In fact with all my research I found out that most are plastic not metal like the Eureka C2094G .The metal ones last forever. Now we finally found the exact replacement the Eureka Heavy Duty Commercial Series . It has a 50 foot cord and that's the longest you will find.Instead of putting all extras and accessories into the vacuum it is just pure raw power .If you want a vacuum that lasts 25 years this is it.

I purchased this vacuum less than 6 months ago and it is already useless.About 2 months ago, the Turbo Brush attachment (which was wonderful at first) stopped working completely.Unfortunate, but the vacuum still worked nicely.Currently, I vacuumed my whole house and smelled that familiar hot smell and thought I was burning through a belt. Not so.Upon opening the bottom of the vacuum I found that the beater bar had caused so much friction with the vacuum casing that it burned through 2 layers of plastic casing on the vacuum unit.It cannot be repaired and Bissell customer service won't do anything despite it being under warranty.I am taking the unit back to the store where I purchased it for a refund!

Carpet Pro CPU 2T Commercial Vacuum Review

Carpet Pro CPU 2T Commercial Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros: It is a reasonably priced (less than half the price of a Dyson!), reasonably quiet, has a reputation for durability, picks up cat hair (yea!), and has a nice long cord so you are not having to move your plug around every room.

Cons: Haven't found any yet... I guess the one thing some people will dislike is that it's a big yellow monster, so it doesn't have the style cachet of a Dyson or even Hoover. But it's a vacuum cleaner, so I quickly got over that.

I stressed over our vacuum cleaner purchase more than I should have. I read the Amazon reviews, Consumer Reports, Consumer Search, and any other site I could find.

At the end of the day I came down to this vacuum and the Hoover U8173 Savvy TurboPower... Amazon's reviews of the Hoover U8173 Savvy TurboPower vacuum were limited in number but all positive; however, there was a mixed story out on the web on other sites/reviews about it. There were a few others that I absolutely ruled out after finding killer issues:
Dyson: destroys berber carpets AND costs $500
Hoover Tempo: only $70 or so, but seems to have some durability issues and no onboard tools.
Eureka: Not well built based on reviews and personal experience

This Carpet Pro is thus far amazing. The night it came, I vacuumed and it picked up every piece of dirt and lots I couldn't see. It was also quiet enough that it did not wake my sleeping kids.

Three other observations:
1) I ordered this exact model - I got the CPU-2T model with on-board accessory tools.. I couldn't find that model on Amazon at the time I purchased it so I ordered it elsewhere... Glad we can order it from Amazon now.And I paid the same price WITH tools as most other stores had the CPU-2 (the model without tools) because of a 10% off coupon... The tools work well - intuitive to use and the hose is sufficiently long for me.

2) This vacuum is not well known... It took a lot of hunting to learn about it, though two reviews I read were from Vacuum repairmen, who said it was the most durable, trouble-free vacuum they see. I knew it was a bit of a risk to buy a relatively lesser known vacuum. But it is commercial grade and made by the Tacony Corporation, who also makes Riccar and Simplicity vaccuums. Two different vaccuum stores recommended Riccar to me, so I felt better about this choice as a result.

3) We have a cleaning person come for occasional "deep cleaning" of our house - she loved the vacuum. Since she is someone who has lots of experience with different choices, I thought this was a good indicator that the Carpet Pro is a keeper!

--------
UPDATE July 09: We have had this vacuum now for about 9 months, and still love it. It picks up dirt and dust as well as it did when it was new, and behaves like it is indestructible. The only thing I don't love are the bag changes - not the neatest, but well worth the effort!
--------
Update Dec 09: Still going strong - no issues, and cleans as well as the day we got it! One additional comment - it is great for pet hair - the onboard tools do a nice job of snapping pet hair up, and what it doesn't get I use a lint roller on.

Oreck XL2000RHB 8LB Comm Up Vacuum Review

Oreck XL2000RHB 8LB Comm Up Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to be a believer in these vacuums. Not any more. We've had them for more than 10 years, and have had to replace them every 3 years or so, and have them repaired every 3 months. Something always breaks. For the record. We have 2 units in our house, and have purchased probably 6 in the past 10 years. So my views are based on substantial experience, not the first 3 weeks of a honeymoon.

Initially, we were attracted to the fact that they are supposedly "commercial", and you do occasionally see them in hotels. However, they are identical to the retail units, with the exception of the power cord and the warranty. The reason the retail units are 3 times as much money, is that they have a multi year warranty, which these vacuums need, because they break CONSTANTLY.

The Oreck people blame everyone...its the way you use it, its the cleaning people, its the kids, its bigfoot and the martians.... its everything but the lousy construction. We do have an active household and a large family, but that is no excuse for the thing constantly breaking.

They do vacuum ok, and they are light. But they are junky and built poorly. I finally had it last year when our main one died yet again, 2 months after its last $75 trip to the Oreck store. I bought a cheap hoover from Amazon, and lo and behold, it works better, cost 1/3 as much, and hasn't broken yet in almost a year.

Don't believe the hype. Too bad, as most vacuums are lousy anyway, but these Orecks are just junk. Its amazing how much we fall for fancy marketing. But these vacuums are simply not worth the money or hassle.

If you use a vacuum once a month, live a quiet life, and make little dirt, then these will do ok for a while. But if you expect to get $200 worth of value, look somewhere else.

Hoover WindTunnel Bagless Upright Vacuum, WindTunnel T-Series, UH70105 Review

Hoover WindTunnel Bagless Upright Vacuum, WindTunnel T-Series, UH70105
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Usually I won't buy a product on Amazon without seeing at least one customer review...but at $100 I thought I'd take a chance. I wanted a lightweight vacuum with good power, one that was bagless, able to pick up animal hair, and wouldn't cost me a fortune long-term with replacement filters. So far, this vacuum fits all those criteria.

PROS
- Easy to put together. It took me about 4 minutes once the pieces are out of the box. A Philips screwdriver is required to secure the handle. There's nothing complicated here.
- Long cord. Plus, there's a little cord clip up near the handle to secure the cord.
- Power. I was surprised to see how quickly this cleaned up and how much it got out of my carpet, even after my Roomba had taken a turn just before. Very good at getting fine cat hair out of a medium-pile carpet.
- Lightweight. You sacrifice a motor (i.e. it's not self-propelled), but the darn thing is so light it hardly matters. I had no trouble pushing this thing around; in fact, I found it easier to push without the motor than my bigger, heavier Bissell bagless vacuum (which weight about 10 pounds more but was self-propelled). It weighs about 15 pounds. Plus, the top of the canister serves as an additional handle for the entire vacuum, so you can pick it up in two different places.
- Easy to empty. The bottom of the canister is hinged. Push the button to unlock the canister from the vacuum, bring the canister to your garbage, and push the latch (easy to do) on the front of the canister. The darn thing just empties right out. (Just be sure you've got it over the garbage when you do!)
- Filters. The packaging says you never need to replace the HEPA filter (located at the top of the canister), and the canister's cone filter is apparently rinsable. I haven't had to deal with either yet.

CONS
One star off because of the little noises associated with operation. First, there was this weird chirping sound for about 5 minutes after using it the first time. It did, however, go away - looks like it was literally a squeaky wheel. And second, once you get something of weight in the canister, like a tiny piece of gravel, it whirls around and around and around...and you hear it whirl around and around...it's pretty loud. But overall, neither of these would keep me from purchasing again.

Panasonic MCUG471 Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

Average Reviews:

I'm glad to be back with Panasonic.I had a Panasonic vacuum that lasted at least fifteen years.Less than two years ago, in the process of blowing insulation into the walls, from the inside of the house, my beloved vacuum died.Needing one quick, I went to Consumer Reports, and, based on their recommendations, purchased an Eureka Boss.BIG MISTAKE!Pain to use, tired of getting hit in the leg with the hose, when not in use. When you needed to use the hose, you had to stop what you were doing, move the dial -- hose -- then move the dial back to vacuum regular.Tools falling off.You get the picture.Hated to have to vacuum!

Even though I take good care of my things (especially now a days, when nothing seems to last), the Boss broke in two, less than two years later. So, I came back to Panasonic and am VERY HAPPY I DID.

The UG471 is GREAT!

I have two non-stop shedding Siberian Huskies. This vacuum works great picking up their hair on hard wood floors and on carpeting. The tools, especially the hose, stay on board, when not in use and there is a place for all the tools on the vacuum.Retractable cord -- lovely!

The only downfalls I would site -- needs a longer cord (but it seems every manufacturer has shorten them to 30 feet. And a "grab" place on the front, for when you do not want to use the "power paw" when vacuuming stairs.

Excellent buy/value.Next up, a new Panasonic answering machine.Goodbye crappy Uniden (another terrible Consumer Reports recommendation!).

Other highlights include an ergonomic handle, a foot-step handle release, a headlight, a 15-inch cleaning path, an integrated carrying handle, and a 24-foot power cord. A single touch activates the cord-rewind mechanism, making storage easy and convenient. The vacuum cleaner measures approximately 12-1/2 by 15 by 44-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.
