Panasonic MC-CG885 OptiFlow Lightweight Bag Canister Vacuum Cleaner

This vacuum cleaner sucks. There I said it, now that that's out of the way let's get down to the nitty gritty the down and dirty. For the past five years or so I've only been using bag less vacuums. I have three. A Eureka upright, a Panasonic small canister and a DustBuster. Bag less vacuums are a breed unto themselves. You get to save the cost of the bags but you have to figure out how to empty them without making a bigger mess than you just cleaned up.You have to supply a bag of some sort so you can contain the dirt and dispose of it neatly. With a bag vacuum like the MC-CG885 that's not a problem. What IS a problem is the bag inside is quite small and very costly. As Amazon doesn't sell it (yet??) I found it on the Internet for about $6 per bag. For a bag as small as it is, that could be quite an expensive proposition to maintain. My first thought is if you have new carpet, they usually shed for quite a while (my bag less upright pulled up a lot of blue fuzz) and you'll fill these bags very quickly. Going back to my first sentence, this "OptiFlow" has a lot of suction power. That's good it pulled up dirt like nobody's business.

To begin back at the beginning, assembling this vacuum was relatively easy. The hose attaches to the body with an easy twist and the wands also go together with positive latching mechanisms that are quite secure. Just make sure you connect the outboard power line so the beater bar and light get their power. It's a simple, one way is right, positive connection. When it's all together I noticed a few issues. There is a hook on the body to support the wand and head in an upright position for storage or rest. It sometimes tips over.If the head is set to anything other than extra low it always tips over.It won't park as easily as an upright. It on the other hand isn't as heavy as a typical upright. It's fairly maneuverable too. It has three free spinning casters on its bottom and they roll easily on carpet or floor. I have both. The power cord is VERY long so you can plug it in and clean a large area or maybe two rooms. It retracts easily with the press of the large button on the top of the canister. Under the "hood"it has hidden storage for the crevice tool and small brush. Both work as expected. The business end of the hose has a pistol type grip and sliding on off switch. This is where you can attach the tools or by disconnecting the head end power cord you can use one of the rods for an extended reach. The power switch is an Off, Floor, Carpet three position switch. It also controls the beater bar on the head piece. It operates smoothly and efficiently.

I experimented with different heightsfor the head end. At its lowest setting it has a tendency to want to pull you forward, It's very strong and digs into the carpet. As I raised it that corrected the situation and still got the cleaning done. Just be careful to get the right height setting. As for cleaning a floor, not so good. Light or loose dust is fine but for heavier grime you'll need something better for that. It's not a mop.

Changing the bag is easy and neat. It rests in a basket that has a handle to lift it out of the body. It's all under the big hood that opens easily. That the bag is small and expensive is the biggest most damning strike on this otherwise fine vacuum. It is also relatively quiet for one that is as powerful as it is. I would love to see Panasonic come up with an emptyable cartridge that would go where the bag is, but that's not going to happen.

To sum up. It's strong, quiet, easy to use and does a very good job. I just can't get over the fact that you will be running up serious expenses on bags.

UPDATE: March 14: I would raise the Star level to 4 now that Amazon is selling the bags and at a reasonable price (4 for $10). It ends my biggest gripe.

After replacing carpeting with wood flooring, I was on the lookout for a good, light weight canister. My upright did not work on the wood floors and the hose attachment created back-breaking work.Sweeping & swiffering still left dust behind. After many months of searching I found this Panasonic. My upright Panasonic has been a rugged, dependable machine, so I knew the brand would be a sound buy. This vacuum is just perfect for wood/laminate/tile floors. In addition it does great on area rugs (low pile) and it's a dream on stairs (carpeted).Light weight, easy to manuever, with very good suction. Powerhead adjusts to wood/carpet and the rotating brush makes sure all dirt disappears.Very pleased with this vacuum.

Panasonic MCUG471 Upright Vacuum Cleaner Review

I'm glad to be back with Panasonic.I had a Panasonic vacuum that lasted at least fifteen years.Less than two years ago, in the process of blowing insulation into the walls, from the inside of the house, my beloved vacuum died.Needing one quick, I went to Consumer Reports, and, based on their recommendations, purchased an Eureka Boss.BIG MISTAKE!Pain to use, tired of getting hit in the leg with the hose, when not in use. When you needed to use the hose, you had to stop what you were doing, move the dial -- hose -- then move the dial back to vacuum regular.Tools falling off.You get the picture.Hated to have to vacuum!

Even though I take good care of my things (especially now a days, when nothing seems to last), the Boss broke in two, less than two years later. So, I came back to Panasonic and am VERY HAPPY I DID.

The UG471 is GREAT!

I have two non-stop shedding Siberian Huskies. This vacuum works great picking up their hair on hard wood floors and on carpeting. The tools, especially the hose, stay on board, when not in use and there is a place for all the tools on the vacuum.Retractable cord -- lovely!

The only downfalls I would site -- needs a longer cord (but it seems every manufacturer has shorten them to 30 feet. And a "grab" place on the front, for when you do not want to use the "power paw" when vacuuming stairs.

Excellent buy/value.Next up, a new Panasonic answering machine.Goodbye crappy Uniden (another terrible Consumer Reports recommendation!).

H20 Vac Turbo Water Filtration System Vacuum Cleaner Review

H20 Vac Turbo Water Filtration System Vacuum Cleaner

I grew up with an old Rainbow (well over twenty years ago) and noticed the huge advantages of having a water filtration vacuum. it's great for reducing the dust in your house, and with frequent usage, can seemingly eliminate the presence of dust all together. You can accomplish that using this vacuum. BUT... ONE: the suction is not what it claims to be. the twenty year old rainbow I had significantly stronger suction. So beware if you have lots of carpets. TWO: the water reservoir is a good size, but you use VERY LITTLE water. You have to change it frequently while using (again, if your house is heavily carpeted, this issue can be a pain). THREE: clean-up of the vacuum itself is another step you have to account for.because you use so little water, dirt can splash around the plastic tunneling where that spits the dirt intothe water reservoir. it's not difficult to clean, but with the crevices, takes a little bit of time. It's necessary, if you don't want the scent of previous dirt to haunt you when you use the vacuum next. Also, when storing, paper-towel the reservoir and the plastic tunneling dry before you store it, or leave it out to dry before putting it back in. You don't want the scent of mildew either. I've read complaints about how flimsy the plastic is. It's an exaggeration. Compared to the Rainbow, where the plastic is so strong and rugged that it is seemingly childproof (I remember, my syblings and I abused the machine growing up and it still kept on going strong), the H20 vac fails to compare, BUT it's strong enough for frequent use, and the abuse from regular usage. beware of children though. it's notchildproof strong! all together i feel it's a fair vacuum for the price. it's honestly a tenth of what the rainbow is, so compared to that, it is sufficiently a tenth of the price of the Rainbow. This will hold me over until i can afford to have a rainbow in my life again.
