Bissell : 31063 FeatherWeightTM Vacuum Cleaner Review

I needed a good working, and affordable vac to clean up my small college dorm room's carpet (It's not a very plush carpet). This vac surprised me! So far it's been working out fantastic! The long handle is detachable and so is the top head so you can convert it into the familiar dust buster. It's small enough to store under a bed in a dorm room. It has a pointed wand attachment too. This certainly isn't something you would want to use as a main vac for a house, but it's great for the dorm. The cord length seems to work great for my 16'x12' dorm room--so it does NOT operate as a cordless, so no worries about the battery dying out on you. It's bagless so the canister has to be emptied...

which brings me to my only complaint about it... everything seems to get stuck to the filter... hair, dust and dirt... so it's not just a matter of emptying the canister. You have to pick everything off the filter, and it has a tendency to get inverted so you have to pull it out to clean it good. So my suggestion is to clean it over an open trash can... and for the dust you just can't seem to pick off, use a lint roller on the filter and it seems to clean it up well. (which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5)

Otherwise, great vac for the price paid (Approximately $20 at Wal-mart).

Bissell Versus Cordless Bare-Floor Vacuum, 21R9 Review

Bissell Versus Cordless Bare-Floor Vacuum, 21R9
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a huge fan of Bissell products and everything that I have ever bought from the company has been a roaring success in our house. We have the Bissell Quick Steamer and the Bissell Steam Mop. Both of these little vacuums get a workout in our house, but I have yet to find a cordless vacuum that I am happy with. We bought a Shark which I absolutely loved until it burned out two years later. The next investment was our Dirt Devil Vibe. The suction was great for about a month and then it just stopped picking up. Since then I have been making do with a good old-fashioned broom and pan, but I always keep my eyes peeled for a cordless vacuum that works.

Bissell sent over their new Bissell Versus Cordless Bare Floor Vacuum and I couldn't wait to open it up. As with all cordless vacuums it requires a good charging before it will work so I had to wait until the next day to use it. Upon it charging, I was ready to roll and I had two willing and messy children to help me break it in. After a morning breakfast of cornflakes (for Ethan) and Cheerios (for Emily), we had the perfect scenario for testing out this vacuum.

The first thing you will notice about this vacuum is that it is an unusual shape. The design might not make sense at first, but when you are trying to get in those crevices around your furniture, it makes complete sense. It is a V-shape design that allows you to get right against your kitchen table and chairs without having to manuever around it. It does require a little manuevering though when you are trying to get around the outer perimeters of your room, but you just line it up against the wall and push around that way.

This vacuum has great suction and within minutes, I could see that it had picked up every last little cornflake bit and Cheerio.Again, the design factor comes into play on this model because the V-shaped design helps so that you aren't scooting stuff around (as I had experienced with other cordless models) and actually suctions it into the center.

While intended for bare floors, you could also use this vacuum on low pile carpeting. The vacuum is brushless so you aren't having to deal with trapped hairs and threads underneath. Best of all, it is bagless and has any easy to release cup where you can dump out what you catch...like Cheerios or cornflakes!

I would highly recommend this vacuum and can't wait to put it to the Clark test and see if it can survive a few years of hard work in our house.

Here are a few easy tips for picking a cordless vacuum that will be a good fit for your family:

1. You will be much happier with whatever you are purchasing if you can test drive it. Borrow one from a friend or just take them through a spin in the aisle. It would be ideal if you could use it, but if you can't just try pushing it around to see if it glides easily.

2. Pick a store that has a good return policy. I knew that Target is pretty good about returns, so I picked that store. In the case of the Shark, I read a story of one lady who had went through three in a month so it is good that the return policy would allow her to do that.

3. Online stores are great and might have more affordable pricing on these, but the pure and simple fact is, if it is defective or you just plain hate it, you have to ship that back. Who wants to be running a sweeper over to the post office? Physical stores are better in this case.

4. Sometimes extras (which cost extra) aren't worth it. Stick to the basic functions and look for ones that offer the best sweeper for your money.

5. Just like all things, the highest price does not make it the best. Some of the higher priced models had a lot less power than the one I purchased.

Product Description:
Lightweight and easy to use, this cordless stick vac works great for keeping low-pile area rugs and all bare-floor surfaces clean throughout the house. Its unique V-shaped base directs large debris into the center suction path while picking up fine particles along the arms. The angle of the arms increase air flow, allowing for greater suction at the end points of the base, which means the unit captures debris that normally gets left behind in corners and other hard-to-reach areas. In addition, it provides a comfortable handle, a bagless dirt container, a low-profile base for access under furniture, and a foot-activated power switch. The rechargeable bare-floor vacuum cleaner delivers up to 20 minutes of cleaning power per charge and measures 8-4/5 by 10-1/2 by 43-1/2 inches.

Hoover Flair Bagless Stick Vacuum, Bagless, S2200 Review

Hoover Flair Bagless Stick Vacuum, Bagless, S2200
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With new low pile carpeting (berber) and tile floors elsewhere in my home, this seemed to be the perfect solution and alternative to my trusty Kenmore. The Hoover was easy to handle, descent suction, fairly easy to empty the canister (albeit slightly messy as the dust/dirt tended to "fly" a bit), long electrical cord and an overall lightweight appliance easy enough to manage under tables and chairs and such. However, the third use resulted in a crack in the foot that attaches to the body - this resulted merely from preparing to turn off the machine - too much pressure when placed upright? One crack lead to another, then chunks flew off to the point that the bottom no longer stayed attached to the unit, no way to replace the part without replacing the entire base/foot - not cost effective and of course, past the 30 day return. If the hard plastic connection from foot to base were reinforced or if a preventive measure of duct tape or such around the connection were made I believe this minor adjustment would resolve this unfortunate complication. A call to Hoover netted "ah, sorry to hear of that, never heard of a problem like that before".I didn't know the one I bought for my sister had done the same thing until after I shared the details of my call to Hoover with her. She agrees it's a good concept, but plagued by an otherwise minor flaw.

Bissell 3106A Featherweight Lightweight Vacuum Review

Bissell 3106A Featherweight Lightweight Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted a lightweight, compact vacuum to use every evening after dinner on the kitchen floor. Our regular vac was too bulky to pull out for quick jobs, and we didn't have a spot to charge a cordless.I settled on the Featherweight because it was small enough to hang from my mop rack and only cost $20.

This vac is ideal for picking up dust and pet hair on wood or tile floors. However, I've found that with larger, heavier items (such as spilled dog food), the vac often has to be lifted up over the item and placed right down on top of it in order to pick it up; if I just push the vacuum over dog food, it often just pushes the dog food in front of the vacuum head instead of sucking it up.Removing the vac head and using this as a hand vac works much better for picking up dog food and the like.

I've also found that items about the size of a marble (again, spilled dog food) get jammed right behind the plastic shield covering the intake opening of the vac.To remove them I need to jam a stick back there, loosen the item and then pry it out. This is a pain in the neck that I really don't need.

Finally, there's no way to clean the dust off the filter without using your bare hands; this vac really needed just a tiny brush that attached to the unit to make dusting off the filter easier and neater. As it is, after every use I need to pull clumps of dog fur off the filter with my bare fingers - yuck!

I think that once this breaks (as I'm sure it will - it's made of quite junky plastic and doesn't seem all that durable) I'll go out and spend a bit more money on a higher quality stick vac. However, for $20 this little cheapie picks up the messes and doesn't take up too much space.

Dirt Devil Accucharge 15.6 Volt ENERGY STAR Cordless Bagless Stick Vac, BD20035RED Review

Dirt Devil Accucharge 15.6 Volt ENERGY STAR Cordless Bagless Stick Vac, BD20035RED
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Dec '09 after about two weeks of research on lightweight vacs.I needed one that could handle: LOTS of dog hair (retriever/spitz mix!), four kids, the usual kitchen crumbs, area rugs, hardwood floors, tile and very low nap carpeting (whew!). We also have a woodstove and frequently have small leaves and wood debris from the logs being brought in the house. In the past, I have tried Bissel Turbo Sweep (kept breaking) and the Shark (new version with one side brush; battery died after one year and brush roll got so full of hair that it was a pain to try to keep it clean).Tired of batteries dying or the vac dying!

A big problem with cordless vacs is that the battery will inevitably die out on you within a year because of "overcharging" it.I really liked that this vac has a "smart charger" that only charges the vac what it needs and then reduces the charge to a trickle so that the battery does not get overcharged. The charger base is about the size of a dustpan and holds the vac in place well, so you'll need a place on the floor that you can park it.Handle does fold down if that makes a difference in your storage options.

First, the "cons":plastic body feels a little flimsy; it is awkward (but doable) on steps; whole body of vac swivels and not just the nozzle when you pivot it and takes a little getting used to; handle is NOT ergonomic and vac starts to feel hand "heavy" after a while (I can still use the vac with just my forefinger wrapped around the end of the handle and that helps). Also, if you are vacuuming a very dirty rug, the dirt cup will fill quickly and will lose suction.

Now the "pros":this vac REALLY picks stuff up! I am AMAZED at the amount of dog hair, crumbs, etc this thing will pull in! (Good-bye, doggie tumbleweeds!) Great for kitchen; scatter rugs get clean without being sucked up into the vac; great on tile, hardwood and low nap carpets.I also like the brushroll on/off feature so I can go from hardwood to carpet easily. Gets the edges clean too.The head of the vac is smaller than I thought, so if you can't get the edges clean going alongside it, I can get it clean coming straight at the edge. Now things like dog food and air soft pellets (two boys) will rattle around if you vac them up, so I usually end up emptying the dirt cup if that happens. Noise is moderate; it is, after all, a vacuum.Noise increases a bit if dirt cup gets full. Fully charged initially in under six hours, and again, place it back in its charger base and it will charge only what it needs (charging light goes out when vac is fully charged again).Have not used it enough to wear out the battery charge as I try to keep it's continual use under 10 minutes. It has a two year warranty on it, which I think is above average. After I vac my den carpet, and after about every other use on regular floors, I use my big vac to really clean the filter and filter screen as that is a key to getting good suction with these type of vacs. This thing picks up so much dog hair and dirt that I usally have to empty the dirt cup out at least once when I use it on my den rug, but not having to lug my 21- pound sears vac around is worth it. If the dirt cup was larger, it would be near perfect! I currently use Swiffer sweeper pole for my hardwoods and it looks like this vac will pay for itself within six months of not having to buy those refills all the time! So, I guess the only thing left to find out now is how long this will last!

PS:The dirt cup release button looks like you depress it downward, but actually you have to press upwards on it or you might break it! Also, on deeply patterned area rugs, it does not do a good job; but again for scatter rugs and everything else I mentioned, it does.Hope this helps!

Traditional Ni-Cad Battery Charging Systems

When traditional Ni-Cad battery systems are kept plugged into the wall, energy (or current) is constantly being pumped into the unit. Even after the battery is fully charged, it still continues to supply it energy. This sends heat to the batteries and "cooks" them, damaging the battery cells. This damage to the batteries gradually decreases run time and also wastes energy.

AccuCharge™ Technology

The AccuCharge system constantly monitors the unit's batteries and charging status. This "smart charger" recognizes when the unit is fully charged and then reduces power to the unit to a trickle charge for maintenance. This prevents power and heat from constantly being pumped into the batteries and "cooking" them. AccuCharge also uses an efficient switch mode charging adaptor, which combined with AccuCharge circuitry utilizes less energy. In a recent study, the use of Dirt Devil's acclaimed AccuCharge technology showed to maintain charge more than twice as long as regular batter charging technology.

Since the AccuCharge Stick Vac can easily be set on its dock for charging, there is no need to worry about loose batteries or needing spares. ENERGY STAR certified AccuCharge technology will reduce electricity usage to only a trickle once your battery is fully charged. You can store your stick vac on the charger without having to worry about wasting energy, space, or money.

Electrolux EL1014A ErgoRapido Bagless Cordless Handheld/Stick Vacuum Cleaner Review

Electrolux EL1014A ErgoRapido Bagless Cordless Handheld/Stick Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This cordless stick vac is lightweight, compact, and has an appealing design and color! It has a convenient base station, and has a built-in hand vac.The filter is easy to clean and has not only an easy to empty canister, but also a "twang" feature that helps you rid the filter of dust without soiling your hands.Awesome! The stick vacuum cleans my 850 square foot condo (all hardwoods) in a single charge, with charge to spare for using the hand vac on upholstery. (I haven't had to use it on carpet or in larger settings, so can't speak about it's performance there). It's compact, perfect for apartment-dwellers or for use in designated smaller areas of a larger home like kitchen, foyer, pet areas, etc.And frankly, I think it's adorable and LOVE the orange color - - very cheery when you're doing mundane work like vacuuming :)

People should have reasonable expectations of what a stick vac can do. A stick vac will never have the suction and power of a regular-sized vacuum, and you shouldn't expect it to!I keep a neat home, and vacuum once a week with my "regular" vacuum, a powerful, full-sized bagless upright with HEPA filtration that works great, but is kind of cumbersome and heavy to use everyday.

I use the ErgoRapido just for daily use in between "real" vacuumings, to keep my place neat and tidy everyday, free of cat hair/litter, crumbs in the kitchen, dirt tracked in the foyer from shoes, etc. - - and it works AWESOME for this purpose.I wouldn't expect it to do the job of a corded, full-size vacuum - - but it's awesome for everyday use to clean up little messes and dusty areas here and there.

I've owned other stick vacs in the past, and been disappointed with their performance (Dirt Devil "Vac-n-Mop" = TERRIBLE!).But this product so far is much better!I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a maneuverable, easy-to-use and sleek vacuum for light-duty work or cleaning in between "regular" vacuuming.

Hoover Flair Bagless Upright Stick Vacuum with Power Nozzle, S2220

This is a fantastic little vac.It isn't as loud as my last stick vac and it doesn't scratch my wood floors. The first day I bought it I really put it through the paces.I was impressed with how well it cleans floors, carpets and rugs with fringe.I love the fact that you can turn off the roller to do the fringed rugs and floors. It picked up popcorn and screws easily.Sand and gravel from the kids shoes, no problem. After a rain, the floor got a little muddy from all the kids going in and out so I just turned on the brush and VOILA, the dried mud went right up.
It really does stand on it's own, even on a soft cushy carpet.
The only changes left to make is to lengthen the cord a bit and put a small pull-out nozzle high up on the side so I can use it for practically everything, such as dusting windowsills.I won't let my wish list ruin the review though.5 stars for the best little vac I've had yet.

Bissell FeatherWeight Vacuum, Bagless, 3106B Review

Bissell FeatherWeight Vacuum, Bagless, 3106B
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used this every day for years (I can't remember how many--but at least four years).I recently bought a new one only because I was afraid of scratching my floors due to the rollers not turning as well as they had before.I moved the old one down to my basement work area, and use the new one in the main living areas.

I have three dogs (previously four) and two house rabbits, all of whom go through times of heavy shedding.During those times I sometimes vacuum certain areas twice a day. There has never been any maintenance problem with this vacuum cleaner. The suction is strong enough for me to do my rag rugs and area rugs, and the rollers don't scratch my wood floors. It's easy on my back, conveniently converts to a hand vac, and is easy to take out and use at a moment's notice (no tedious unwinding of long cord).

One reviewer did write that this vacuum is hard to clean.I clean mine by dumping the bulk of the debris into the trash, then vacuuming the filter periodically with my Kenmore heavy-duty vacuum cleaner. The chamber holds a lot of dust, so even when my pets are heavily shedding, I don't empty it more than every 2 - 3 days.

If I only could have one vacuum cleaner, this would be it.
